Watea
Bay of Islands
This masterplan was created by Graham Applin while leading the Beca Architects team, following a request from an overseas investor seeking to purchase 410 hectares of undeveloped land near the Bay of Islands.
The project aimed to develop a destination for tourism while also providing much-needed housing and facilities for the nearby communities of Paihia and Opua.
The proposals investigated a range of potential land uses and ultimately included markets, a school, healthcare and wellness facilities, together with a luxury destination spa resort, family hotels, apartments, and a new retail village hub.
